On Saturday, June 15th, we were excited to attend and be a sponsor at the Iowa Craft Brew Festival in downtown Des Moines. This year was the Iowa Brewers Guild’s 9th annual festival where craft breweries from all over Iowa got the opportunity to showcase some of their best beers. Over 70 craft breweries and cideries were featured at this year’s festival and around 20 of them had been certified through our Iowa Green Brewery Certification program.
Showcasing the IWRC's Iowa Green Brewery Certification program, at our table, festival attendees had the chance to talk sustainable beer with our specialists and even win some Green Brewery goods by playing a game. The game involved attendees tossing wooden coins into difficultly-placed beer steins and, depending on what stein the coin would land in, the attendees would receive a corresponding prize. Goods included anything from Green Brewery stickers, t-shirts, and even pretzel necklaces.
With some great beer and some even greater people, the day was filled with various conversations on what it means to be green brewery certified. Joe Bolick, manager of the Iowa Green Brewery Certification program, says that “this event is always a great way for us to really show off not only the work we’re doing with all of these great breweries but also all of the really cool things Iowa breweries are doing to minimize their environmental impact.”
This past week was a busy one for the Iowa Green Brewery Certification program. Program managers, Joe Bolick and Jenny Trent, made a trip down to Des Moines a couple of days before the Craft Brew Fest to attend the 2019 Iowa Environmental Council “Pro H20” Event where the two received recognition for their successful and innovative work with the Iowa Green Brewery Certification program.
