We are honored to share that the Iowa Waste Reduction Center (IWRC) is a recipient of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2017 Food Recovery Challenge (FRC) Regional Award from Region 7.
Through the FRC, businesses and organizations pledge to improve sustainable food management practices and report results, either as an active participant or an endorser. IWRC has been an endorser for years through our efforts to work with businesses and communities throughout Iowa to reduce and prevent food waste.
Each year, participants and endorsers from every U.S. EPA Region are awarded to highlight their food waste prevention and diversion activities and we are fortunate to earn this award in particular for our efforts to reduce food waste in Iowa’s K-12 schools - Iowa Waste Reduction Center (IWRC): Works with K-12 Schools to Reduce Food Waste - of which we have worked with 29 schools in 12 school districts.
“The IWRC is honored to be recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a 2017 Food Recovery Challenge Regional Award Winner. Our work with K-12 schools in Iowa has been very rewarding as we have seen districts across Iowa implement strategies to prevent and reduce food waste. We still have a lot of work to do in Iowa and across the country to promote better uses for food and look forward to assisting K-12 schools through grant funding from Rural Development, United States Department of Agriculture.” says Jenny Trent, Waste Reduction Specialist at the IWRC.
We are also excited to be in great company among the other award recipients and are thrilled to see a few had joined us at the 2017 Midwest Food Recovery Summit - Food Rescue Partnership, Johnson County Department of Health and Environment, Shawnee Mission School District, and Central Michigan University! Congratulations to all of the 2017 award winners.
