Worth Brewing in Northwood Iowa just became the seventh brewery in Iowa to achieve the Gold Certification from the Iowa Green Brewery Certification Program (IGBC).

The Iowa Green Certification is a program developed by the Iowa Waste Reduction Center from the University of Northern Iowa. The certification program provides assistance to Iowa craft breweries looking to comply with environmental regulations as well as engrain sustainability and waste reduction into their brewing process. 

Worth Brewing, originally certified in 2017 at the Bronze level, has implemented several new waste reduction initiatives. The brewery has put a large emphasis on both its energy efficiency and environmental management practices, utilizing all high efficiency equipment and minimizing wastewater discharge from the brewing process. In addition, Worth Brewing uses locally sourced oats, honey, and hops for specialty beers.

“Peter Ausenhus [owner, Worth Brewing] is really doing some impressive things in the world of sustainable craft brewing,” states Joe Bolick, program manager of IGBC and director of the Iowa Waste Reduction Center. “We are proud to honor his work with a gold level certification.”

Worth Brewing joins Fat Hill Brewing (Mason City), Franklin St. Brewing Co. (Manchester), Keg Creek Brewing Co. (Glenwood), Peace Tree Brewing Co.(Knoxville), Second State Brewing (Cedar Falls), and Textile Brewing Co. (Dyersville) in the Gold level of the IGBC program. While three other breweries in Iowa have moved on from Gold to Platinum, IGBC’s top ranking.
